Going On A Road Trip? Better Go Through This Checklist First

Heading out on a road trip? Traveling somewhere new or visiting home? Whatever your reason, make sure your car is ready for the journey ahead. No matter how long or short the journey ahead may be, if you’re going to take a car, make sure, it’s ready for travel.

You’ve probably heard of the acronym B.L.O.W.B.A.G. before. It stands for “brakes,” “lights”, “oil”, “water”, “battery” “air”, and “gasoline.” Long distance drivers know this by heart. In case you need a quick refresher, here you go:

Brakes

You want to be able to stop your car as much as you are able to go. After all, faulty brakes cause many accidents. You don’t want to one day find your brakes malfunctioning while you’re driving down a highway at high speed.

If your brakes look worn, or if you hear grinding noises when you apply your brakes, or if it takes a greater effort than usual for the brakes to work when you applying them, then these are signs that you need your brakes fixed or looked at. Check your brake fluid level too.

Buy brake pads, brake discs, and brake fluid on OLX in case your car needs it.

Lights

You want to make sure your headlights are working. Your headlights illuminate the path ahead of you while also keeping you visible to other drivers. Test your high beam as well. Besides your headlights, check if your tail lights, brake lights, signal lights, and fog lights are also working.

Your tail lights make you visible to drivers behind you while your brake lights let them know if you’re braking. Without these, people driving behind you might not see you until it’s too late and crash into your rear. Meanwhile, your signal lights help you communicate with other drivers if you’re turning or switching lanes. Finally, your fog lights help provide additional visibility when it’s foggy or if heavy rain is falling.

Look out for unusual things like dimness or flickering. Your signal lights might flash unusually quickly as well. Before you replace any bulbs, check your car’s electrical systems first. It might be a wiring problem. However, if you need to replace lights, buy replacement lights on OLX.

Oil

Oil serves as the lubricant for your car engine’s moving parts, reducing friction and damage. Oil also cleans your engine of sludge.

In general, you change the engine oil during certain scheduled maintenance sessions. However, if you see the Change Oil sign on your instrument dashboard, you should have it checked immediately.

One week before heading out for your road trip, have your oil checked. Buy motor oil on OLX and keep it in your car so that you can have your preferred motor oil on hand in case you need to change.

Water

Your car uses water for several different purposes. For one, your car uses water in the radiator to help prevent your engine from overheating. For this, you should check the water level as well as the radiator itself if it has any leaks.

Check the water level on your windscreen washer as well. The water in your windshield washer helps reduce friction between your wiper blades and the windshield. Check the condition of your wiper blades while you’re at it. They may need replacing. Buy replacement blades on OLX in case you need them.

Keep water for the radiator and the windshield washer ready on your road trip. Buy a water container on OLX so you can be prepared without buying disposable water bottles that you have to throw away.

Battery

Without your battery, your car won’t be able to run. The battery starts the car and keeps the engine running. Besides these, car batteries power everything from the lights to the radio/entertainment system, to the alarm system.

Has it been awhile since you replaced your battery? Batteries normally need replacing every 2 or 3 years. Check your battery for any signs of corrosion or swelling to get an idea of how soon you need to change it. You should also watch for the Change Battery sign on your instrument dashboard.

Luckily, even if your battery dies some car battery companies have delivery and replacement services.

Air

Check the air in all your tires to make sure they’re all at the right air pressure. Having under or over-inflated tires affect your car’s performance. It may also result in premature wear and tear. Use a tire gauge to measure the air pressure on each tire (You can buy these on OLX).

Check your tires for signs of leaks. Driving with a flat tire is very dangerous. Look for a vulcanizing shop near you in case any of your tires look like they have any leaks.

Gasoline (or fuel)

Check your car’s fuel levels. Your fuel propels your car forward so you don’t want to be out of that. Make sure you buy fuel that’s compatible with your engine. Cars run on either gasoline or diesel.

If you find anything wrong with your car, make sure you deal with it immediately. Go on OLX to find someone who can help you deal with any car troubles.

Of course, besides checking your car, you also want to make sure you buy the tools to deal with emergencies. Check out our article on things you should buy and keep in your car at all times. While you’re at it, you can also check out the rest of content on cars on our Cars microsite.
