It’s an exciting time to get a car. With more and more car brands entering the Philippines, there’s no shortage of options. And with some cars being manufactured locally, we can expect prices to be fairly within reach. Now that we’re in the final quarter of the year, we look at the new car releases as of September 2017.

Honda CR-V Diesel

A favorite in the Philippine market, the Honda CR-V now has a diesel variant available in the country. You won’t have to worry about carbon emissions with this car, though. Through Honda’s Earth Dreams Technology, the car’s 1.6-liter i-DTEC turbodiesel engine produces only 94 kg/km of CO2.

Its lightweight engine has an output of 118 hp and 300 Nm. Together with its 9-speed transmission (manipulable by paddle shifters), this car has much to offer in terms of performance.

Unlike its gasoline variant which is a 5-seater, the Honda CR-V Diesel is a 7-seater vehicle. The CR-V Diesel looks to contend with other 7-seater SUVs like the Toyota Fortuner and the Mitsubishi Montero Sport.

The cost of a Honda CR-V Diesel ranges from around P1.6 million to over P2 million, depending on the variant.

 

2017 Honda City

Another popular car in the Honda lineup, the 2017 Honda City gets a fresh new look. The new Honda City sports the same engine as its previous iteration. It still carries the same 117 hp and 145Nm, 1.5-liter i-VTEC gasoline engine, as does the current Honda Jazz and Honda Mobilio.

While specs under the hood might be similar with the previous model, on the outside, its updated looks are enticing. Thanks to its facelift, the new City looks sharper, sleeker, and sportier.

The cost of a 2017 Honda City ranges from over P764,000 to over P1 million depending on the variant.

 

Toyota Avanza

The Toyota Avanza serves as one of the go-to options for people going on road trips with the family or the barkada. This 7-seater prides itself in its practicality. Its 1.3-liter Dual VVT-i gasoline engine puts out 95 hp and 121 Nm of torque. There’s also a 1.5 liter gasoline engine variant that has max output of 103 hp and 136 Nm max torque.

The new Toyota Avanza has some updated visuals such as redesigned taillights. The interiors get some slight alterations too. The third-row seats can now be folded individually, giving more options for passengers and cargo.

The cost of a Toyota Avanza ranges from around P700,000 to around P950,000.

 

2017 Chevrolet Spark

This 4th generation iteration of the model brings some new things to the table. While unveiled without much fanfare, the 2017 Chevrolet Spark is no pushover. The car steps up with the biggest engine it’s ever had – a 1.4-liter ECOTEC gasoline engine. Dishing out 99 hp and 128 Nm, it’s the little engine that could.

Besides better performance, the Spark also gets improved looks overall both outside and in. Despite being an econocar, the Spark has a more premium feel compared to previous iterations.

All in all, the Spark is an excellent choice, especially for people looking for their first car. It’s easy to drive, maneuverable, and packs respectable power.

2017 Kia Picanto

The 2017 Kia Picanto debuted at the Geneva International Auto Show earlier this year. Reviewers describe its appearance as “sleek”, “modern”, but “playful.” Its appearance makes it akin to the Kia Rio which was also released in the Philippines this year.
The new Picanto comes with the 1.2-liter Hyundai Kappa gasoline engine. The engine provides a max output of 83 hp and 122 Nm of max torque. However, Kia also offers a variant that comes with a 1.0-liter turbo gasoline direct injection engine giving it 98 hp and 172 Nm.

The cost of a 2017 Kia Picanto ranges from around P650,000 to over P690,000, depending on the variant.

 

2017 Toyota Wigo

Kia isn’t the only one with a new car in the supermini segment. Toyota also throws its hat in the ring with the 2018 Toyota Wigo. This cute little car comes back with a sportier, more macho look, according to reviews. However, the new Wigo has also changed under the hood. The Wigo now carries a 1-liter KR-VE VVT-i gasoline engine. While not massive, it dishes out a respectable 65 hp and 89 Nm.

The car remains a strong contender against other cars in the segment. It will definitely compete with cars like the Chevrolet Spark, the Kia Picanto, the Honda Brio, and the Mitsubishi Mirage.

The cost of a 2018 Toyota Wigo ranges from over P525,000 to P600,000, depending on the variant.

 

2017 Honda BR-V

Honda’s answer to the Toyota Innova gets a new iteration as well. This entry-level SUV sports 7 seats and is slightly bigger than the Honda Mobilio. Under the hood, it packs a 1.5-liter SOHC i-VTEC gasoline engine. The engine produces 118 hp and 145 Nm.

While not packing as much power under hood as the Innova, the BR-V has enough to get the job done. It has enough power and stability to get the job done. According to the reviews, it does well even when going off-road.

The cost of a 2017 Honda BR-V ranges from around P990,000 to almost P1,120,000.
